Clinical psychology jobs FAQs
As a clinical psychologist, it’s important to have a varied set of skills, as you support people of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds, with a wide range of mental health conditions.
First and foremost, you need to have a passion for helping people. At Pulse, we look for people with a high level of emotional intelligence, empathy, good interpersonal abilities as well as strong communication skills.
Patience is also important, along with being able to function well as part of a multidisciplinary team. Having good analytical skills and attention to detail are beneficial too, as you’re required to solve problems, use critical thinking and closely observe everyone you treat.
At Pulse, we recruit for a wide range of clinical psychology jobs. Whether you are newly qualified or have been in the profession for many years, we’ll have opportunities that suit where you are in your career right now, and where you want to be in the future.
You can find work supporting groups such as adults, children, the elderly or those with learning disabilities. We also have roles available in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, health centres, community mental health teams or social services. Wherever you’d prefer to work, we can match you with opportunities that fulfil your requirements.
Working as a locum clinical psychologist comes with flexibility, freedom and financial rewards. You can choose where you work and when, selecting your own shifts and benefitting from attractive hourly rates of pay. As a locum psychologist, you also get to experience a lot of variety as you can work across many different settings, with a range of patients and health professionals.
For clinical psychologists looking to broaden their experience, locum work can also quickly widen your professional network as well as strengthen and build upon the skills you already possess. You get to experience new challenges that will help you to progress more quickly than you might in a fixed role.
Locum placements generally last anywhere from a day or two up to a few months. With high demand for your skills in the NHS and private settings, there are plenty of opportunities available to you.
There are a range of career options you can pursue in clinical psychology.
If you want to specialise in a particular area of clinical psychology, you could focus in on an area such as clinical neuropsychology, adult mental health, CAMHS, learning disabilities or eating disorders. You can also support people in palliative care or addiction rehabilitation, or work in physical health psychology.
You also have the option of progressing into senior psychology roles. As a clinical psychologist, you can move into a clinical supervision or management role, leading teams or departments. With experience, you can also be promoted to a consultant psychologist and then become a head of specialty. You can then become the head of a psychological service or even establish your own practice.
When you join Pulse, we’ll partner you with a dedicated consultant who specialises in clinical psychology recruitment. They’ll take the time to find out your preferences and professional ambitions, in order to match you with the right opportunities.
We have preferred and sole supplier status at a number of NHS and private healthcare organisations, so you get exclusive access to jobs before they’re advertised anywhere else. We offer competitive pay, a reliable daily payroll with your choice of payment method, and a £300 friend referral bonus. You’ll also have access to high-quality training through our eLearning platform, which has been designed to support your CPD.
