A midwife provides care and support to women and their families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Some roles and responsibilities you will undertake include:
- Monitor women and their babies during and after pregnancy
- Support women and their families, facilitating classes for pregnancy and parenting
- Manage labour and perform delivery of babies during birth
- Provide pain management during labour
- Identify and manage risks to mother and baby
Because you will support a variety of families, you will need to be empathetic and an effective communicator. Pregnancy can be a highly emotional time for families, whether it goes according to plan or not.
A midwife’s salary in the UK starts at £28,407 on band 5. After completing a 12 to 18-month preceptorship, they immediately move to a band 6 salary, starting at £35,392. A consultant midwife on band 8b-8c can earn between £55,000–66,000.
A midwife’s salary in the UK can vary depending on several factors, including location, experience, and the type of organisation you work for.
To secure a midwifery job through a midwifery agency or the NHS, you need to complete a university degree, an apprenticeship run by an approved education institution or a specialist course.
Courses you could complete include:
- Midwifery degree
- Health or social care degree
- Postgraduate degree
- Midwife level 6 degree apprenticeship
Any midwifery university course or apprenticeship needs to be approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You could also volunteer to gain more relevant experience to support your university application.
The time taken to complete different types of courses will vary, for example:

Newly qualified midwives then join the NMC register to practice legally in the UK.
