Counselling psychologist FAQs

What skills and qualities do you look for in counselling psychologists?

Excellent communication skills are crucial, as you interact with a wide range of patients, as well as other health professionals. You’ll need to be able to help people understand their own mental health, thought processes and ways of improving their wellbeing. Passing on sensitive information is also part of the role, whether around patients’ own diagnoses and progress, or in the recommendations and updates you discuss with other healthcare workers. As such, empathy and confidentiality are both important.

It is also crucial that you have strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, as you’ll spend a lot of time assessing people’s needs and developing treatment plans. You’ll need to be open-minded and flexible too, with the ability to adapt to any changes that happen to a patient along their treatment journey. Self-regulation skills will also allow you to remain objective, providing unbiased support to those that you care for.

What salary and pay rates are available to counselling psychologists in the UK?

Counselling psychology salaries for permanent NHS roles in the NHS typically range from £43,742 to £50,056 if you take on a band 7 role. More senior positions can be between £50,952 and £57,349 when working at a band 8a level. Salaries can reach up to £70,417 to £96,376 in band 8 c and 8d roles, which can include working as a principal or consultant psychologist.

Counselling psychologists in private healthcare and locum roles can earn higher financial rewards, though there aren’t standardised rates as with the NHS.

What job opportunities are currently available to me as a counselling psychologist?

At Pulse, we have counselling psychologist jobs available in a variety of specialisms and settings.

There are opportunities to work in adult mental health, CAMHS and eating disorders teams, as well as in neuro-rehabilitation, forensic, addiction and trauma services. We have roles in both the NHS and private healthcare providers too. If you’re searching for more flexibility in your career, you can also take look at the locum opportunities that we have available.

What are the benefits of working as a locum?

Locum work offers flexibility, independence, and attractive financial rewards. You have greater control over who you work for, where you work and your shift pattern. You also benefit from competitive hourly rates. With placements ranging from a day up to several months, you can take on locum roles that work for you.

If you’re looking to build upon your skills and experience, becoming a locum counselling psychologist can also help. You can quickly expand your network and develop future career prospects. Changing your workplace can also bring new learning opportunities, allowing you to progress and broaden your horizons within your field.
