A&E nurse jobs FAQs

What are the daily duties of an A&E nurse?

An A&E nurse, also known as an emergency care nurse, plays a vital role in providing immediate care to patients. Your daily duties will include assessing patients upon arrival at the hospital and triaging them based on the severity of their condition. After prioritising patients, you’ll allocate appropriate resources and care accordingly.

You’ll also initiate and provide emergency treatment in order to stabilise patients. This can involve administering medications, performing wound care, providing pain relief and performing resuscitation. Monitoring patients’ vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, is another critical duty. You’ll continuously assess the condition of patients, identifying any changes that require immediate attention, as well as analysing test results.

Your responsibilities will also include maintaining accurate and comprehensive documentation of patient assessments, treatments, and interventions. This involves recording vital signs, any administered medications, and all communication with the healthcare team. You’ll work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, paramedics, radiographers, and healthcare assistants. This collaboration ensures efficient patient flow, thorough investigations and coordinated care plans.

As an A&E nurse, you’ll also provide essential health education to patients and their families, explaining diagnoses, treatment recommendations and self-care advice. It is important to ensure that patients understand their medical issues and health conditions, along with how they can empower themselves to manage symptoms and improve their health.

A&E nurses also provide emotional support to patients and their families during stressful and traumatic situations. It is essential that you can communicate compassionately, offer reassurance, and address concerns to alleviate ongoing anxiety.

What is an A&E nurse’s salary in the UK?

Based on the Agenda for Change pay scales, when working within the NHS in a permanent role, an A&E nurse’s salary will typically start at a Band 5. Those with less than two years of experience will earn £28,407. This increases to £30,639 for nurses with two to four years of experience. Once you have over four years of experience, you can earn £34,581.

As a Band 6 A&E nurse, you can earn from £35,392 to £42,618 depending on your level of experience.

A&E nursing roles within private healthcare organisations often come with higher salaries, though exact figures vary between companies.

If you work as a locum A&E nurse, you’ll be paid by the hour, which often works out at a higher rate than full-time roles.
