Registering with a GP in the UK

In nearly all cases, GPs are the first point of contact for any medical concerns.

If you’re planning on living and working in the UK, you will need to register with a GP. To do so, you will have to fill out a GMS1 form; this will be available from your chosen practice (to find your local GP in the UK, please follow this link). The details requested will be the same as those you provided for your visa application.

The GP practice must accept you, unless there are reasonable grounds not to, however, these cannot be discriminatory. Once you have completed and returned the GMS1 form, your medical records will be transferred.

Some GP practices may ask you to verify your ID and address upon registering. If you do not have proof of address or identification, you should not be refused registration. You can find further information on this by clicking here.

Useful NHS contact details:

If you’re feeling unwell, but it isn’t an emergency, making an appointment with the GP is the best port of call. However, we’ve provided a list of alternative contact details for other medical concerns and situations.

  • Dial 111 if you are in urgent need of medical help. This line is not to be used for life-threatening situations. 111 can also be used if you are unsure of which NHS service you need.

  • Call 999 for life-threatening situations or if you or someone else is seriously ill/injured.

  • If you have a minor illness/injury which can’t wait until your GP practice is open, you can go to a walk-in centre, minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre.

Speak to your local pharmacist for assistance and advice on common minor illnesses (such as headaches, sore throat and travel health). Click here to read more about what you can expect from your pharmacy team.
