Setting up a mobile phone in the UK

Relocating to the UK involves a fair share of life admin; we want to make sure the process is as smooth and hassle-free as possible. Once you arrive, one thing you’re bound to need is a working phone with a UK number. We’ve answered some frequently asked questions below to help.

What are the main phone providers in the UK?

Below is a list of the four main providers. There are multiple other options to consider; however, these alternatives have to partner with one of the four primary networks to use their signal. It has been said that this can weaken the signal strength, so it’s worth checking before you make a decision.

You can enquire with each provider about the network coverage they offer in your local area. Alternatively, you can check this by using the online Ofcom mobile and broadband tool.

What will I need to set up a phone contract?

The majority of providers will require the below information to set you up with a contract.

  • Proof of address (two different documents which show your name and address)

  • ID (such as a passport or driving license)

  • A bank account to set up your direct debit payments

Are there any short-term contract options?

Most mobile phone contracts are 24 months long, so if you are residing in the UK for under two years, it is worthwhile considering other options, including pay as you go or sim-only deals.

With a sim-only deal or pay-as-you-go set up, you can use your current handset – providing it is unlocked and compatible with your new network provider. With a standard, longer-term contract (typically 24 months), you will get a handset included in the monthly price, which you can keep at the end of the agreed term.
