Visas required for working in New Zealand

If you’d like to work in New Zealand as a nursing professional, a key part of the process is arranging your visa to ensure you can lawfully practice within New Zealand.

Here we guide you through the different types of visas you may be eligible for in order to work in New Zealand:

Skilled migrant visa

Permanent residency may be possible with an application through the skilled migrant category (skilled migration visa). People who have the skills to contribute to New Zealand’s economic growth can apply for the skilled migrant visa. The skilled migrant visa is a points-based visa, costs $530, this visa allows candidates to stay indefinitely and the age range for applications is below 55 years. You’ll need to send an expression of interest detailing your employment in New Zealand, work experience, and qualifications.

Essential skills work visa

If you have been offered a full-time job, and you have the necessary qualifications and experience to work in that job, you can apply for a temporary visa to work in New Zealand. The Essential Skills Work visa costs $495 and is processed within 3 months. This visa allows candidates to stay in New Zealand for up to 5 years and the age range for applications is below 55 years. This visa type offers an excellent opportunity for nurses wishing to experience living and working in another country at a relatively low cost.

Working holiday visa

The working holiday visa costs $280 and is processed within 35 days. Candidates must 18-30 years of age and this visa allows candidates to stay in New Zealand for 12-23 months.

Skills assessments & registration

To work in New Zealand you must first have your qualifications assessed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) relevant authority and obtain occupational registration with the New Zealand Nursing Council.
