Merchandising is seen as the more ‘glamourous’ side of retail; merchandise teams will decide what products to buy and how they should be displayed in-store. Administrators and assistants work with merchandisers to develop strategies and produce reports, so good communication and analytical skills are a must. Elsewhere in retail, junior-level jobs are also available in customer services and in store.
Marketing is ever popular for those seeking an entry-level role. Duties may include helping to organise events, updating websites and preparing launch packs. Marketing is where most of an organisation’s creative thinking takes place so you should also be resilient, confident, energetic, extremely motivated and positive.
