Free Courses – Pulse shall offer registered candidates access to free training, including
NVQ training up to level 4. Special concession is available to individuals who have
earned their qualification abroad.
Fee-Based Courses - Courses are commissioned at competitive rates to ensure that
Pulse candidates are provided with a 20%-50% discount off market rates. A careful, due
diligent vetting process is implemented in the selection of reputable partner training
institutes and contractors to guarantee high quality standards for all courses and
workshops.
Guided, Self-supported Learning - For individuals who desire a more relaxed pace of
learning or for those who are unable to attend traditional classroom learning, guided self-supported
learning provides as much or as little support as is required. Training courses,
including text, are provided along with contact details of your personal learning
facilitator who will guide you through discussions and assignments.
Suggestions - Although we confer with professionals and academics for our training
program, we listen when Pulse candidates tell us which courses & workshops are most
relevant to their sector of practice. Our candidates advise on the types of training

Achieving Best Evidence - (ABE) - Training
For all Social Workers that support vulnerable and intimidated witnesses and victims of
crime (including children, older persons and adults) to access justice in a timely and
supported manner.
Learning Outcomes for ABE training are:
- Demonstrate understanding of Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act as it relates to
vulnerable, intimidated victims and witnesses (both children & adults).
- Demonstrate an understanding of legislation in relation to sexual, physical and
emotional abuse.
- Recognise methods and requirements of effective support and preparation of victims
and witnesses for the investigative process, including the interview
- Define effective strategies for investigation and interview of vulnerable and intimidated
victims and witnesses.
- Demonstrate effective retrieval of evidence without prejudice or investigative bias/
contamination through effective interviewing skills
- Recognise the importance of joint investigation, the roles, responsibilities and value of
working together
- Recognise and acknowledge personal limitations in investigations

Court Skills for Social Work Professionals
This two day course, led by an experiences Barrister, provides the skills and knowledge
needed for all Court related work. It shall further develop proficiency in all aspects of work
connected with and leading to appearances in family court, including writing statements,
chronologies, assessments, reports & care plans for family court proceedings.
Participants will learn & improve their skills in providing evidence at family court
proceedings, skills of negotiation and care management with other parties in court.
Course Aims & Objectives:
To raise awareness of and to familiarise delegates with:
- The applicable components of Court Skills
- An understanding of why Court Skills are necessary in social work
- “Best Prep” guidelines
Participants should at the end of training be able to:
- Describe the different stages of the revised Public Law Outline process
- Identify the impact of the PLO on their own court work practice
- Understand how best to prepare their social work documents for court
- Understand how to instruct Experts when in the PLO process Give
- Illustrate how to work productively with Children’s Guardians and parents, during court
proceedings
- Prepare effectively for and after court hearings
- Give effective oral evidence at court

New BAAF Form for Fostering
This one day workshop, conducted in association with the British Association for Adoption & Fostering, is targeted at social workers who are already experienced in family placements work and undertaking assessments of prospective foster carers.
The aim of this course is to both familiarise workers with the new Form F format as well as to crystallise understanding of the impact of the Training, Support and Development Standards for foster carers on the assessment process:

- Considered the impact of the CWDC standards on the new format and assessment process
- Considered the implications for your practice/your agency

Working with Dual Diagnosis in Mental Health (In collaboration with King’s College)
Highlighting practice concerns when working with individuals who are dealing with the
compounded issue of substance misuse and living with a diagnosed mental illness.
The aim is to build confidence in workers who are either not specialists within this area, who are
relative newcomers within the mental health field, or, for those who are seeking a high quality
refresher course. Primary focus shall include understanding and use of appropriate vocabulary and
terminology, and liaising with mental health professionals, particularly medical staff.
The following topics shall be covered:
- Psychosis with substance abuse
- Identification of symptoms and behaviour (how to tell whether a person is using)
- Recognizing different behaviours associated with specific types of drugs usage
- Assessing the user’s environment and any tell-tale signs
- Drugs recognition through examples & samples of different drugs
- Linking with support services
- Detoxification support
- Monitoring compliance with services
- Consideration of care of children and the condition of the home
- Managing children reintegration into the home, home visits, i.e., frequency, supervised/
unsupervised
- Managing legal aspects of panel recommendation panel or petition to the court
- Monitoring, support maintenance, evaluation and review
