Higher Education Courses in Social Care
There is a range of qualifications offered at higher education level by both universities and colleges, with something for everyone depending on whether you academic or vocational study.
BTEC Higher National Diploma
If you are looking for a higher education course in social care that combines academic study with on-the-job placement experience, a BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) is recommended. You can gain this qualification in subjects such as care practice or health and social care.
Foundation degree
You could also opt to study towards a Foundation degree. It is difficult to specify exact requirements as they vary by institution, however, it is not always necessary to have formal qualifications before embarking on this degree (although level 3 qualifications eg. A-levels, Advanced Apprenticeships or NVQ3 are always welcome). This is ideal for those already in work, as they are flexible and are offered in partnership with many social care employers.
Honours degree courses
Honours degree courses are also available in subjects such as social care, health and social care, health studies and care practice. These degrees are often theoretical, although many will provide you with the opportunity to undertake some work experience alongside your studies. Courses can often be combined with other subjects such as psychology, social policy or sociology.
